A multidisciplinary group of researchers from the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán (INCMNSZ) developed a software that will help improve control of chronic degenerative diseases such as diabetes, said Sergio Hernandez Jimenez, coordinator of the Center for Comprehensive Care of Patients with Diabetes .
In an interview during the fourth annual meeting of the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD, for its acronym in English) to be held in Mexico City, the specialist stressed that good control of diabetes is very important because this condition triggers a number of other diseases.
“Diabetes is a major health problem in Mexico, not only because of its high frequency, but because it is the leading cause of death in adults, amputations, blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, hospitalizations and causes disability.”
Therefore, four years ago the idea of creating a software that would serve as a kind of electronic record, but also contribute to monitoring progress and maintaining a patient.
“We started with a database for external consultation. This system recababa the most fundamental data, which are the most practical and help us so that, in a quick glance, the doctors who attend to a patient with diabetes know what are the major obstacles or barriers to achieve this control targets ” .
Currently, this system can also provide medical alerts or signals to indicate what areas affected by diabetes each patient needs greater attention.
This is important because at the Center for Comprehensive Care of the patient with diabetes, a patient is reviewed on the same day by nine different specialists: endocrinologist, diabetes educator, psychologist, psychiatrist, ophthalmologist, dentist, physical activator, a specialist in diabetic foot and nutritionist .
“And these specialists need to be aware of the status of his patient in other areas, because in this type of chronic degenerative diseases all factors influence. For example, if a patient has diabetes and also suffers from depression or anxiety and the latter are not served in the right way, you may not have courage to follow your diet and it is commanded. Each of these specialists have their own indicators, so that when they enter patient data can issue an alert traffic light (green, yellow and red), in which the level of advancement of the patients are showing “.
This way doctors can create the best route of treatment for each person depending on their profile, the specialist said.
Another advantage to offer this software developed by Mexicans is that you can make an analysis of medical work in order to measure levels of treatment efficiency.
