After two years of research and fieldwork, students, teachers and experts from the Faculty of Mines of the National University in Medellin, created a software and an application that help avoid accidents in mines where coal is mined.
in an interview with Caracol Radio, the researcher and project leader, Oswaldo Ordóñez explained that it is an intelligent system for monitoring the atmosphere in the mine that issues alerts directly to the phone.
“the teams have sensors that measure different gases in the mine and these gases leads to a computer system where there is a software that is telling us in real time if the conditions can cause an explosion and the software immediately sends the signal to an application to the cell, “explained Mr. Ordonez.
the project was developed in partnership with Colciencias in the coal mine San Fernando, where in 2010 an accident killed 73 workers ; for researchers, the new tool will reduce fatal accidents in the tunnels.
“The application is a preventive tool that can give you time, it’s like a traffic light, software and application gives us signals green, yellow and red, and when we are in yellow we have to evacuate; then that can give one or two minutes and in that time many people who can be saved, “said the professor.
In the project, which is already a reality, they involved two groups of research faculty of mines of the National University, 8 engineers and 10 students.
