Some of Tesla Motors vehicles may park on their own without a driver through a software update sent by the company this weekend.
The update also sets new speed limits on the semiautonomous mode “Autopilot” Tesla and made several improvements, including automatic deceleration when the car is approaching a curve and the car stays in its lane even when the marks have faded it.
Elon Musk, CEO of the company, said the parked function is a first step towards their ultimate goal: to enable the owners to call from anywhere to their autonomous vehicles -autos also charge your battery by themselves -. using their cell phones
“I think indeed, and might be slightly optimistic in this, that within two years the car may call from across the country,” Musk said in a conference call with reporters. “This is the first small step in that direction.”
For now, however, the system is not truly autonomous .
“It’s more like a parked remote control,” Musk said.
The owners should place their cars Model S and Model X about 10 meters (33 feet) of space where they want to park. The owner can then stand in a radius of three meters and park the car using a device on your keychain. The owner can also use the device to get the car out of the parking space.
Tesla says the system is useful in tight parking places, but warns that the system should only be used on private property, and it can not detect every possible obstacle. The car could hit bikes that are hanging from the ceiling of a garage, for example.
