Federal US authorities presented Monday a civil suit against Volkswagen for software that manipulated the emissions of nearly 600,000 vehicles with diesel engines.
The lawsuit was filed in Federal Court Detroit district by the Department of Justice and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA by its acronym in English) against the German automaker.
The complaint states that the company installed a computer program illegally designed for diesel engines approved federal emissions standards under laboratory tests. But the car turned off the software to improve performance under normal use. This meant that emissions will rise to 40% of the US environmental standards.
Volkswagen admitted in September that this software was included in their diesel vehicles sold since the model 2009. The company still faces criminal charges separately and is negotiating a massive retreat with regulators in the United States.
