Temuco wants to become a software hub – Explore (blog)

With a clear focus on the region of Araucania and in order to enhance their existing investment in software development factory, a group of companies led by Everis (NTT Data Group Company) has the ambitious goal of in Temuco install what they call a “digital hub” of software development.

The aim of the initiative, which also involved Corfo, the 2030 Engineering Consortium (which groups the faculties of Engineering, universities de la Frontera, Biobio and Talca) and the Center for Training and Development of the Customs Chamber of Chile is to increase the export of ICT services internationally in key areas such as education, health, logistics, smart government and smart city.

With an initial direct investment of US $ 350 000, the Digital Hub, and has more than 250 professionals operating in coding designs sent from Santiago to Temuco, to customers around the country. By the end of this year, aim to reach 500 analysts and late 2017 (when 100% operating is), the figure would reach 800 professionals.

As indicated by the project managers, 70% of the work develops in Araucanía responds to European requirements, while only 30% to requests originating from Santiago. “However, it is important to note that the Digital Hub works under an open innovation model, which develops technology solutions for the challenges of Chile and Latam in cooperation with regional actors such as academic and research institutions, business community, entrepreneurs, local communities, etc. . “says Pablo Manzano, manager responsible for the Digital Hub project Everis Temuco.

Hope

It is important to remember that there have been several attempts in Chile to decentralize the development of computer services for the past 20 years and even some with ambitions to become technological “poles”. Perhaps the most representative was the Laguna Caren Science and Technology Park, which began to take shape in the late ’90s. 2008 was about to be reality, but eventually came to nothing not.

The Science Park Industrial, Technological and Quillota, Valparaiso Building Technology, the Science and Technology Park of Biobio and Biotechnology Park Ñuñoa are other initiatives that have emerged in the last 20 years. Some have materialized. Others do not. You could say that in regions, perhaps one of the most successful projects to decentralize the technology has been the Technology Building Valparaiso (Corfo), located in the Curauma Industrial Park and the symbolic call center BancoEstado in Lota.

In Temuco have been some strong attempts by the computer industry. We must not ignore the fact that this city and UFRO, have been involved in the history of the Internet in Chile. Even the first “call center” of the country was installed in Cunco (60 kms. Of Temuco).

On the other hand, Chile flirted a lot with the computer industry offshoring less than a decade, but the efforts were more than the results.

So, why Temuco? According to Manzano, Everis almost ten years ago he began working with local universities with considerable success, which led in 2008 to install High Performance Centre (CAR) supported at first by Corfo. The center, part of the global network of CAR of the firm, has grown from an initial 30 to 230 professionals today, of which about 30% are Mapuche.

“The CAR Temuco Everis is a true ‘software factory’ – with the highest level of industry certification, CMMi 5 – serving our customers globally. It also produces some of the active software everis group, the main platform of hospital management ehCOS, being appointed in 2013 as the most innovative software in Latin America in the field of health, “adds Pablo Manzano.
