The last tool created by Disney Research may be the ultimate dream of some filmmakers, and the nightmare of more than one actor. It is a kind of “Photoshop” applied to the film world to switch from natural interpretation of an actor without being noticed.

Currently, the only way a close-up shot of an actor reads as director wants to shoot it again. If the interpreter has not found the right expression of surprise, horror or joy there is not much else to do. As director fussy it, that is a huge economic and hour running cost.
Disney Research and the Vision Center, Language and Signal Processing at the University of Surrey they have created a tool that ends the recording of the same scene over and over again by software.
It’s called FaceDirector , and what it does is to analyze and combine different coordinates of the actor’s face to change the frame expression frame.
The system is pure 2D calculation. No uses animation techniques and 3D modeling. However, its creators say it works extremely well, and creates new expressions indistinguishable from the real. It is even capable of changing the movement of the lips to keep coinciding with the line of dialogue. In short, you can modify realistically the interpretation of any player, regardless of age or sex.
The system will be presented at the International Conference on Computer Vision ( International Conference on Computer Vision and ICCV ) that takes place these days in Santiago de Chile. [Disney Research via Phys.org]
