Buenos Aires will the first Latin American city where the Climate Action for Urban Sustainability Model or CURB (Climate Action Model for Urban Sustainability) software will apply. This tool helps outline and improve environmental policies because it allows to estimate with a high degree of precision what impact different technologies, actions or programs for reduce carbon emissions a city.
The international network C40, which brings together major megacities in the world who fight against climate change, these days sent their representatives to the City to make it the first in the region to use this software. Specialists of this network, which Buenos Aires joined in 2009, offered a workshop to train staff of the Environmental Protection Agency Buenos Aires on the implementation and use of the system.
The software is CURB a tool aimed at local authorities, used to build models that reflect what impact on energy and carbon emissions study different interventions. The program allows identify and prioritize opportunities to reduce carbon , in addition to setting goals to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases or local calculate the potential reduction. Thus, it facilitates evaluation of different strategies to achieve to choose the most convenient.
The CURB is fed with different variables, as national legislation, the commitments made by the City and current emissions levels between others. On that basis, we can make a forecast about how they will impact on future emissions the different projects that are launched .
In March 2015, Buenos Aires signed the Agreement Mayors, a commitment signed by 20 Latin American cities to accelerate and promote policies to prevent the effects of climate change. Nine months later he became the second city of the region and one of the top ten in the world to comply with international demands for mitigation and adaptation to climate change. For this achievement, the C40 recognized the city with the Compact Compliant certification, also received Rio de Janeiro.
