Hong Kong In-Media, citizen journalism platform has organized the awards E-Citizen to promote news, political comics, photography and participation online. Following an interview with Chan Chak To, winning the best journalistic award, first person recounted the events of the trial of mass sitting promoted by Occupy Central on 1 July 2014. The original interview is written in Chinese by Marco transcribed Mak, reporter contributor inmediahk.net. The edition in English version was translated by Choi Wan Cheung .
This is a computer engineer who loves 80s video games, football and hanging out with girls. However, their ideas and their lives have completely changed in 2014. If you type 511 in any search engine will find its name because it was one of those arrested July 2 for engaging in civil disobedience protest.
The afternoon of the arrests, Chan recorded in detail his experience firsthand; from the moment he was arrested and taken on a tour bus, which was found in the Police Academy in Wong Chuk Han where he was arrested until his release. This article is full of humor but also is sincere. The reader is transported to each scene of the protest and thus has a more realistic view of how it all began. The article by Chan has won the E-Citizen Award-Media In Hong Kong the best journalism. The day of its publication article went viral, which surprised the author.
What amazes even more, is that Chan says his future changed that night. Why decided to demonstrate the afternoon of July 1 ?. According to him, it all started in June and sincere support requested two weeks’ leave to stay home and watch the World Cup. During this time the Hong Kong Legislative Council discussed the preliminary proposal for financing the development plan of northeastern New Territories. Discuss as witnessed abuse of parliamentary Ng Leung Sing especially, Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Legislative Council, did not comply with the procedure. That’s when he decided he had to do something for Hong Kong.
When Chan surrounded the headquarters of the Legislative Council on June 13, stressed that he did not feel ready to jump the fence and confront the police. “I really ashamed of myself to see other younger students confronting. They had no fear of being arrested, and I felt useless . Compared to them probably had less to lose. Should have gone a little further. ” At that time only had one thought: “No matter what, but I must do something to protect them.” He shed tears when you think about it and even wondered why it was so cowardly
Following. events of June 13 felt guilty and regretted his behavior. So when the Student Federation of Hong Kong (HKFS) reported a series of massive sitting at the end of the year after pro-democracy march of July 1, decided that there would again be a deserter and participated in it. Coincidentally be spoiled credit card that day and asked his girlfriend a $ 500 loan if I had to pay a deposit. “This time it was itself prepared for the arrest.”
In 2003, Chan was in his last year of pre-university education when the March of July 1 against the law for a number of laws on national security had place. He did not join the protests, but stayed at home playing computer games. Neither you nor cared interested social and political issues. He was never committed to any leading position in student organizations of the university and turned a deaf ear to any matter of student associations. “I’ve always felt disconnected without enthusiasm to participate in any social movement.”
He claims to be an independent person had his own room in the residence. [...]. 4 years ago left his job as a computer engineer and moved to Australia where he met his girlfriend. For a time he worked on a farm picking strawberries all day, after cleaning toilets in hotel. He enjoyed what he did and why life in Hong Kong was so oppressive, where the working day is long and the few holidays are continually asked. Chan wanted to find the “ideal” place in periods of holiday work.
Before leaving for Australia, worked as a software developer in telecommunications was to send automatic messages to mobile clients, “for example when you get to Macao you receive a welcome message, etc. But while you feel that this makes no sense. ” Before returning, I wanted to become a journalist because there was a mission within the profession that was report the truth and also loved to write. It was once said, “do not go back to your old job because he has not reported you happiness.” However, life is often frustrating and apparently when he returned scheduling software seemed to be his only skill. He found work as a journalist and had to return to his former profession, but began to write what he saw and heard in social media.
Have blogged with friends to share your thoughts. “A few years ago entered the hospital after suffering a pneumothorax and narrated my experience and feelings.” Your article One in 511 , which won the Citizen E-In-Media, prize details many scenes he witnessed the afternoon of July 1 and the next day: feelings of his fellow protesters, Scenes Police yy its sincere appreciation to middle-aged participant came to Hong Kong from Shenzhen. “A part of sharing my feelings recording what happened, I wanted to tell people around me what I thought and demonstrate that social action and even civil disobedience are not so far from our lives.”
“I never imagined that in Hong Kong there are many people concienciada to social issues, such as the Central Occupy movement. Every day there trajeadas people arriving at Admiralty to see what happens “. If we want to involve the politically apathetic people, Chan believes that political messages have to be in plain language. “The people refuse to read in academic jargon. I want to write stories that reach the public, Wong Tze Wah I like (Hong Kong famous comedian who writes political news jokingly). Maybe I adopted her mood unconsciously. “
three months he was arrested ago, but has returned to the streets again and camped in Connaught Road Central (one of the streets of the sitting), because you want to express their persistence in fighting for what he believes. His family does not agree with what you do because they think that if you have a criminal record can affect their opportunities for promotion and job prospects. “I have spent all paid leave this year and am currently an unpaid leave”. However, if your company requires you to immediately return to his post. Chan says with a smile that his girlfriend has also begun to participate in protests and camped on the street overnight. She supports and understands him. “Understand what I’m doing and even told me you can fight and I will work for a living”
What has touched him was the support he has finally gotten by her family, who visited him in Admiralty. Chan says he rarely talks about social issues with his friends but spread their ideas and what you hear and see in social media. “Most of my colleagues are of the generation of 70. You often wonder why people can not just focus on their work instead of fuss.” Chan wants to use his writings and actions to tell you that in this society money is not all that matters, wants to make them understand that there are other values that worth fighting. People get involved in social movements because they want to achieve a society in progress.
