The future: the company defined by ‘software’ – La Vanguardia

Abraham Lincoln said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it yourself.” Today, most dominant companies in many sectors are those that have defined “our” future basing their business model entirely in software. We have examples like iTunes Apple, for music, Nexflix to videos or Amazon for books. The telco’s fastest growing Skype and HR recruitment is Linkedln . The software is also devouring the value chains of companies in the physical world.

Companies in all sectors, from financial services, healthcare, logistic, retail, oil, etc. are being transformed due to software. Companies and organizations today have the opportunity to revolutionize their business models and services by setting the software as a strategic asset.

The company strategy aims to improve and innovate the services they provide to their customers, giving value to its owners or shareholders and engage and motivate their employees. To achieve these strategic objectives is necessary to develop new applications, improve operations, guide the processes to new technologies and accelerate project management. Obviously, this must be integrated within a framework of risk management.

There is also great saving opportunity thanks to improved efficiency. It is estimated that only 1% improvement in efficiency in the sector of fossil fuels could save more than 90 billion dollars over 15 years.

Having a data center defined by software allows have the agility to the organization of ICT operate at the speed that requires a business. But to redefine our business in the new model is also required redesigning applications incorporating based on SaaS (“Software as a Service”) components and PaaS (“Platform as a Service “). These new applications, research firms Gartner and IDC are defined as “the third platform.”

The second platform refers to the client-server architecture, where the software comes bundled so that it is only must customize it to their own needs. But the key point is that such solutions are designed mainly for business. Compared to the first platform, based on large mainframes, software is more economical, easy to use and need little training. This allowed the development of a mass market for software

A combination of factors is energetically promoting the adoption of the third platform. Applications designed primarily for consumers or customers and then to the company, not vice versa as is the case of the second platform applications. The expectations of consumers are easily accessible, low cost, simplicity of use, and most transparent pricing model.

Imagine you have a car accident, and that the insurance company has provided a application geolocates us by GPS, so that the company can send a “drone” in a few minutes to conduct testing to generate the part photos, and immediately make us get a crane and possibly a replacement vehicle. This is the kind of services that users will demand in the near future.

This paradigm shift will also affect those who control budgets ICT company. Currently the organization of ICT company responsible for managing the technology budget. But in times of change, when disruptive technologies or new business opportunities without precedent appear, is the business who directly takes control of decisions affecting maximize return on investments, contain costs and optimize acquisition costs.

Currently over 70% of the budget of Information Technology (IT) organizations assign each year, is intended to maintain existing technology infrastructure and less than 30% to elements of innovation. Each year more resources are directed to keep the infrastructure in order to meet the growing needs of enterprise computing.

The new company defined by software due to its nature, it is possible to spend more than 50 % of the budget for innovation, something that placed in clear advantage to companies that have matured and advanced more in the definition of software over its competitors. Or does anyone still remembers Blockbuster?

Tier 1 acquires 25% of Opileak, ‘software’ which tracks … – Diario de Sevilla

The Andalusian company Tier 1 (antitua MP Systems) has acquired 25% of Opileak a software that allows real-time consumers what they say on social networks.

The company said today, and through its Comerzzia platform, “provides a management system for the sector retail , that allow you to control their own sales channels, from Store on line a physical store, retain and interact with customers, buy where or when they want and do it from any device. ”

Tier 1 onsidera c that “by integrating Comerzzia Opileak with a significant competitive advantage is gained, and that can be used proactively and immediately what social networks and the internet think about the products, brands and campaigns “.

Tier 1 explains that Opileak is a tool for monitoring and quantitative and qualitative analysis of social networks and web portals that allows real time what is commenting on a brand, company or an item in Facebook , Twitter, Linkedin, blogs, webs or the same digital media.

similar applications on the market Although there already, Opileak difference lies in its ability to identify the polarity of the comments made on the Web via the syntactic and semantic analysis made of the language used, creating real-time summary of thousands of messages from different sources.

This system “will give entrepreneurs the opportunity to also maneuver in real time, depending for example, how is resulting in an advertising campaign for a particular product and the acceptance thereof by consumer. ”

Google researchers have created a complete software able to use to describe accurately scenes shown in photos sentences, what which represents a significant advance in the field of computer vision. When shown a picture of people playing frisbee , for example, the software responded with the description “A group of youths playing frisbee “. The software can even count, giving answers like “Two pizzas placed in an oven”.

So far, most efforts to create software that understood the images were focused on identifying individual objects, a task that is easier.

“It’s very exciting,” says research scientist at Google, Oriol Vinyals. “I’m sure that will some potential applications of this project.”

The new software is the latest Google research in the use of large collections of simulated neurons for processing data (see “deep learning”). Nobody in the new Google software programmed with rules on how to interpret the scenes. Instead, their networks “learned” after consuming data. Although according Vinyals for now is only a research project, he and fellow Google have already started thinking about how to use it to improve image search or help the visually impaired to navigate online or in the real world.

Researchers at Google created the software through a type of digital brain surgery, connecting together two neural networks developed separately for different tasks. A network had been trained to process images and create a mathematical representation of its contents, thus preparing for the identification of objects. The other had been trained to generate complete sentences in English as part of automatic translation software.

When networks are combined, the former can “see” an image and then provide a mathematical description of what ” sees “the second, it uses that information to generate a readable sentence. The combined network was trained to generate more accurate descriptions. For this they were tens of thousands of images with descriptions written by human beings. “Through language we see what we thought was the image,” says Vinyals.

After this training process, the software was used with several large datasets of images from Flickr and other sources, and asked that describe. Then the accuracy of their descriptions are judged by an automated test used to determine the performance of computer vision software. Google software got scores in the range of 60 on a scale of 100 points. Humans who test normally achieve a score in the range of 70, according Vinyals.

This result suggests that Google is far ahead of other researchers dedicated to creating software for describing scenes. Recently, Stanford researchers have published details of their own system, ensuring that scored between 40 and 50 on the same standard test.

However, Vinyals notes that Google researchers and elsewhere are still in the early stages of understanding of how to create and test this type of software. When humans Google asked to rate their software descriptions of images on a scale of 1 to 4, the averaged was only 2.5, suggesting that still has a long way to go.

Vinyals predicts that research on understanding and description of scenes will intensify. One problem that could cause delays is that, although they have created large databases of images labeled by hand to train the software to recognize individual objects, fewer photos tagged more natural scenes.

year, Microsoft launched a database called COCO to try to fix this situation. Google used in its new research COCO, but still relatively small. “I hope other partners contribute to improve,” concludes Vinyals.

Comrat a dangerous spyware that steals information from … – tuexperto.com

Comrat

What we are witnessing a cyber war in the shadows, is something that few doubt. G Data has identified a new highly complex spyware software dedicated to steal sensitive information from governments, companies and institutions. Your name is Comrat , and is related to some very dangerous threats like or Agent.BTZ Uroboros. In fact, the latter was responsible for the largest cyber attack that wins the US so far in 2008. After falling within the enterprise network, Comrat is able to intercept all information that is sent through the browser and even control the system without the user’s knowledge. We tell you all the details of the threat.

The online world has become a new battleground. An environment that offers endless possibilities to steal data or hack certain key systems. The first program was recognized as a ciberarma was Stuxnet , a Trojan resort that was created for attack nuclear plants in Iran and prompting its development plan of enriched uranium is delayed two years. Even before there were other cyber attacks with a significant level of complexity, and the names have been happening continuously.

The last to appear has been Comrat , spyware discovered by the German company G Data. This program hijacks programming interface COM (Component Object Model) and since then intercepts the data traffic that occurs in the browser the PC of the victim. Moreover, this threat is capable of functioning as RAT (Remote Access Tool). That is, hackers can take complete control of the system remotely. A really dangerous program that can work as a spy but is also capable of sabotaging the computer it has infected. Due to its characteristics, is designed to penetrate large enterprises, organizations and governments to hide their activity so that it can not fight the threat.

 G Data

Beyond its danger, the analysis of Comrat has left several conclusions that are very revealing of the level of threat posed by this program. G Data been able to establish clear links between this malware and other threats that did much damage at the time. This is one side of Agent.BTZ , the head of the largest digital divide in the defense system of the US government. Although this threat came in 2008, hackers used the basis of this program to create a new threat of great significance as Uroburos , which we discussed here a few months ago. This threat discovered in March also was intended to intercept network traffic of an organization and could take control of the team.

It appears that Comrat is the next step in these dangerous programs that can jeopardize all types of organizations. G Data has announced that its security solutions protect against this new threat.

Birthstone Test 7.0, a distribution that includes only free software – Bitelia

When we speak Linux distributions, we often mistakenly associate with free software. Many of the most popular distributions include packages from their repositories for proprietary software or drivers eg codecs .

It is not the case of Birthstone , GNU / Linux is a free 100% based on the latest Ubuntu 14.04 LTS operating system. Birthstone commitment is to stay 100% free , asking users to report if they find any part of the system that is not covered by a free license to be replaced or removed. So much so that no firmware binary for wireless cards, or proprietary drivers graphics cards from NVIDIA and ATI, for example is included.

Birthstone is an open project which was initiated by the University of Vigo in order to create a free operating system and Galician . It was officially launched in 2005 and has the sponsorship of Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation.

Many users appreciate the GNU operating system and the Linux kernel for its capacity, reliability or low cost for use, but its purpose is something deeper freedom. We have developed a system of completely free software to guarantee the freedom of users. Only free software you can escape. Triskelion GNU / Linux is a realization of this purpose. It’s 100% free software; Therefore, using Birthstone by you can be sure that everything will respect your freedom to install

. – Richard M. Stallman

In its version 7.0 called Belenos , referring to the Celtic god of the sun, and officially released on November 4, 2014, has some highlights:

  • Linux-libre kernel 3.13 with low latency and planning BFQ default.
  • Desktop GNOME 3.12 based on fallback without graphics effects for better performance.
  • abrowser (a free Firefox derivative) as the default browser.
  • Ability to install GNU IceCat with one click from the home page abrowser.
  • Electrum as client Bitcoin preinstalled.

A software reveals hitherto unknown influences between … – 21 Trends

id=”sep_para_1″ class=”sep_para access”

The task of sorting artwork is quite complex. When examining a painting, an expert can usually determine your style, genre, artist and the period to which it belongs. Art historians often go further, seeking influence and connections between artists, a task that is even more complicated.

So the possibility that a computer is able to classify paintings and find connections between them at first glance may seem laughable. Yet that is exactly what Babak Saleh and his team have succeeded in Rutgers University in the United States. Using some of the latest techniques of image processing and classification have automated a process that could take years done manually, to discover how great artists have influenced each other. They have even been able to detect influences of artists hitherto unrecognized.

According to an article in Physics arXiv Blog, the automated method is based on a new technique developed at Dartmouth College, USA, next to the Microsoft research center in Cambridge, UK, for classification According image containing visual concepts. These concepts range from simple description of the object, the color tones or more detailed descriptions.

The image analysis thus becomes a process of comparison of the words that describe them, for which there are well-established techniques.

id=”sep_para_2″ class=”sep_para access”

Visual Concepts

Saleh and his team applied this technique of machine vision over 1,700 paintings by 66 artists from 13 different exponents styles, framed in the period from the beginning of the fifteenth century to the twentieth. Parallel collated the resulting data with expert opinion on the influence of certain artists over others.

For each table, limited to 3,000 the number of concepts and points of interest generated, resulting in a list of descriptive words to consider as a kind of vector. The task is then to find similar vectors using natural language techniques and a machine learning algorithm.

The problem lies in the definition of influence, ie, determining if one considers that an artist influences another when one of his paintings has a strong similarity to another, or whether there should be a series of Similar paintings and, if so, how many. Seeking answers worked with different metrics. They ended up creating graphs with different metrics on each axis after plotting the position of each artist in this space to see how they grouped.

The results are interesting. In many cases, the algorithm clearly identifies influences and recognized by experts. It is the case of the Austrian painter Klimt, which the graphs show about Picasso and Braque found some left over.

The algorithm is also able to identify individual paintings that have influenced others. That tied Spanish Still Life: Sun and Shadow Pablo Picasso Man and violin Georges Braque, both painted in 1912 and recognized as the origin of Cubism. However, it also recognized the similarities between Old vineyard with peasant woman (1890) by Vincent van Gogh and The Farmhouse (1922) by Joan Miró, albeit very different style share landscapes and symbolism.

id=”sep_para_3″ class=”sep_para access”

Scoop

But most impressive was the link between The study of La Condamine Street (1870) by Frederic Bazille and The Barbershop Shuffleton (1950) by Norman Rockwell a connection never identified. “After researching many publications and websites, we conclude that this comparison has not been done before,” Saleh said.

“The paint may not be similar at first glance. However, a closer look reveals striking similarities in composition and objects are captured by our automated method,” detailed in the published study on the research, entitled Towards automated discovery of artistic influences.

And it’s both Rockwell painting of a barbershop seen through a window as her study Bazille heating stoves are on the right side; roughly where Bazille has a window, a door placed Rockwell; and composition of objects in both works creates a triangular space in the lower left corner.

Of course, researchers do not claim that this type of algorithm can relieve the site of an art historian. After all, the discovery of a link between paintings in this way is just the starting point for future research on the life and work of an artist.

“Our goal is not to get a final answer,” admits Saleh. Rather, it is used as a “tool” for art historians, help them do their job. However, it is fascinating to see how techniques Machine learning can shed new light on such a broad field as well studied art history.

In fact, is not the first machine vision technique applied to the study of art. Face recognition, for example, also be used to identify unknown characters in popular artwork, as stated above another article published in Tendencias21 .

“Free software offers advantages beyond saving” – Deia

Newcastle – a few years now, the Basque Country, through their governments and companies made a clear commitment to free software and pioneered give preference to products made with open source technology. Many of the results of that policy, and weaknesses, opportunities and challenges ahead are being debated in LibreCon 2014 international conference on free software and open technologies that began yesterday at the venue.

The two-day meeting lets delve into the most well-known advantages of free software, such as cost savings, independence from the utility or to make modifications and adaptations as the client, but also serve to promote the project in some institutions, such as the City of Munich and the French Gendarmerie, who performed successfully migrate its proprietary systems from traditional media to open applications.

Eneko Astigarraga president ESLE (Association of Free Software Euskadi), notes that this time the congress not only addresses the technology sector and companies working in this area, but has focused for the whole society to know the advantages and the many areas where free software has great potential.

According to Astigarraga is important to know that free software “creates more value for the territory of the companies that develop these technologies are implemented and allows a greater capacity for development than other alternatives, such as the purchase of proprietary systems and systems that come from outside. ” “For proprietary systems explains President ESLE- no local resellers, but the added value that leaves the resale is much lower than that generated by the development of open solutions, they also create more jobs in their own territory.”

In fact, in the last 8 years, employment in this sector in the Basque Country has increased eleven billing for nine.

more independent In terms of customer benefits of free software, Eneko Astigarraga cites independence and solutions provider that enables absorb knowledge the company or administration.

Asked about the momentum that came with free software reuse decree of the Basque Government and its subsidiaries, Eneko Astigarraga notes that “there is a willingness by the Basque government, and indeed the trends future are going out there, but we still do tour “. “From ESLE adds we are ready to assist management to develop walking and stuff.” According to Astigarraga, although the Basque administration “pioneered” in regulating the preferential use of free software reuse and code release, “then this initiative has not been developed as much as expected,” since in practice approved measures “have been implemented recently.”

In this situation suggests that “the decree administration recommends that before making any purchase of software will check if there is already something similar that can be usable, reusable and develop improved and more then that application is released, because it explains something that is paid with the money of every citizen and it is important to reverse and can be exploited. ” Eneko Astigarraga recalls that “the administration of any developed country is a major plaintiff software services of all kinds and now here is a decision to favor open source would be interesting to take advantage of it more.”

In 2014 LibreCon many topics and areas of interest to businesses, entrepreneurs, developers, consumers and users of information technologies and communication technologies (ICT) are addressed. The conference is structured into four strategic areas-health, education, industry and commerce, but, according to the president of ESLE says, “could have been many more.” “We chose these sectors because they are adds which may have higher implementation and development in the Basque Country. That is evident in the industry, but are also important sectors related to administration, health and education, and e-commerce, which has a strong potential for development and the free software is providing important solutions. FOSS and ICT in general are facilitators in any sector, are very cross could have included technologies and solutions for agriculture and aerospace, to name a few. ”

The example of Munich In the conference valuable management solutions, such as “digital signature with IP telephony, content management systems are studied and Records “,” in all these areas explains Eneko Astigarraga- no open source solutions that are as or more competitive than proprietary software. We understand that switching to these systems takes time and so we will take the example of the city of Munich, which have made the migration to free software. They explain that the process takes time because it requires learning, training people, provide technical support … The Munich is a good example because they have proven to save each year more than 10 million. We have a study that shows that the administration could save up to 400 million euros with the use of open source solutions. But it is not only important savings for the use and reuse, which it is, but also because many solutions are safer and more competitive. When the French Gendarmerie has chosen to open solutions and migrated its equipment to free software has done more for security, that economy. ”

The explanation for this higher level of security is that “attacks usually target the systems that have the greatest impact proprietary. Moreover, in open systems thousands of developers working worldwide, are tested more and better detect failures “concludes Astigarraga.

Free Software, economy and ecology – Linux Addicts (blog)

World Free Software Free Software eco, economy & # xed; a and ecology & # xed; a

These three terms, free software , economy and ecology, little seems to have in common. Free software is some of the modern era, the industry’s new technologies and a revolution of thought in terms of philosophy, ethics and morals. The economy is something that comes from far away, since the money is in our lives and we are now seeing has led to a global crisis.

As for Ecology , is also a fairly contemporary thought and arises when man begins to worry about the surrounding environment instead of destroying it without as had been done in the past. Man, since developing agriculture, has been destroying nature, but never at such strides as in the industrial age. If you look, the three terms are the beginning of a new era, the break old beliefs or lifestyles. On one side breaks free software patents and the power of big corporations. While economics is a social science that studies how to extract, produce and consume goods and services for profit, ending the era of barter and currently based on a piece of paper and metal.

Finally ecology also breaks the descartesiano thought and contempt environment of many, advocating a cleaner and better to leave to future generations and ourselves world. Few the premise that if “nature does not exist, neither do” and opt for selfishness which now only worth thinking about nothing more than money is created.

Well, Given these considerations, say empelar free software leads us to respect the other two terms. Therefore they are highly linked. The creation and use of free software to share and makes better seize the collective knowledge , helping sustainability in the age of knowledge.

development model Open source is effective and saves millions in licensing, leaving the savings to invest in other priority sectors. Faced with more industrial and closed software, which increasingly demand more and more resources towards benefiting the hardware industry and consumption, without being really necessary in many cases, free software often needs less of these resources, extending the equipment life and building on older hardware. It also reduces the energy consumption efficiency, environmentally friendly and prevents further lengthening of electronic waste discharges cycles utility allowing recycled products or many others. And how much it costs to do this? Nothing, because it is free …

The software development is the key to enter the world of … – The Trade

produce mass, but at the same time so Custom , according to the needs of each client. That is the challenge that has been raised industry 4.0. The term was coined in Germany to describe the factories of the future.

This is complexes whose teams are interconnected through Internet , with automated processes, management systems ‘Big Data’ and laboratories for research and development software .

The latter will be key for the entire operation. “The machines will be nothing without that intangible part-the software- that is the language through which orders will,” says Leslie Jarrin, senior specialist consultancy in the software development ThoughtWorks in Ecuador.

The software will, for example, reduce the time of shutdown of an industry as necessary to reschedule their tasks.

Currently, what is done is to give a General Order to build a mobile , for example, and the machines are responsible for making the same activity all the time.
